The Wife of Bath's Tale from Canterburry Tales

  1. I’m not actually reading this story but I was attracted in the story title. This story has one of Chaucer’s most enduring characters, and rightly, one of the most famous of any of the Canterbury pilgrims. The Wife of Bath’s Prologue” and “Tale,” the Wife of Bath discusses marriage, virginity, and most importantly the question of sovereignty. The Wife of Bath Prologue is indeed a colorful character and her long introduction, which provides details of her five marriages, adds substance to her actual tale. She has suffered hardship in her life and her five marriages have not all been successful, but she is a clear survivor and still enjoys life to the full. This in itself is some justification for the way in which she has led her life, and she stresses the fact that she honored her marriage bed and never was unfaithful to her husbands.
On the Wife of Bath’s Tale, the knight has a sin and condemned to death and gave a chance to live by answering the question of the queen. Then he met the old ugly woman and asked the answer to his question but for one condition, the knight will marry the old ugly woman and they lived happily ever after.
I think the message of this story is that women should be allowed to decide things for themselves, and give respect to them.
